Mo-Geeble

“No, I do not think the enemy has any magic left in him, but of course the problem is his familiar. Through that creature, he has all the energy of his companions at his disposal.”

-Mugaq Trine, Scout

***

No-one really knows the origin of these strange creatures, but odds are high that it has something to do with spell casters. Whether the result of a magical experiment or a simple side effect of continuous exposure to great power, these dogs evolved into powerful companion animals.

From a distance, a Mo-Geeble has the general appearance of a rather muscular Dachshund. A closer look soon reveals four total pairs of legs. The paws of a Mo-Geeble are significantly larger than those of a normal dog and its toes are slightly more flexible than normal, thus enabling the creature to climb trees and walls.

What a Mo-Geeble does best is to facilitate the use of magical power. It does so by spreading support spells around, and by helping a caster to generate magic using the energies of other companions. Of course the ability to transfer energy from one individual to another has other uses, making the presence of a healthy Mo-Geeble a valuable asset to any adventuring party.

Martlet

“How does it land?” – Little Jinny Hopsdottir

“It does not land at all, my dear. A Martlet must spend its entire life in the air.” – Garinbach, Village Elder

***

A Martlet is a small bird with no feet. They come in a variety of color patterns.

Because it is constantly moving (this bird never sleeps), a Martlet also hungers constantly. It is at its best in the early morning and late evening when it descends to the trees in search of bugs, or lower still in the hopes of finding seeds from various plants. A Martlet is seldom seen at night when they are believed to rise up to great heights, but during mid-day the birds are as likely to be seen flying in and around a beautiful meadow as they are up near the clouds. Martlets may befriend others for reasons best known only to themselves, providing as a kind of charm for their friends and often serving as a kind of lookout for sleeping companions.

Kitta

“Here kitta, kitta, kitta…”

– Unknown

***

Apart from its wings, a Kitta is the spitting image of a house cat. The wings of a kitta may look like those of a bat, or they may appear as those of a bird. In either event, they are fully functional. Kitta can fly about with great speed.

These creatures are far from stupid. In fact, Kitta possess tremendous intellect and great spiritual power. These creatures don’t do much physical damage in combat, but they do pose a certain threat to the spiritual power of an enemy. If she can swat an enemy and get away from him, a Kitta can help to burn away some of his powers. More importantly, Kitta can be very effective mascots, helping allies through their mere presence on a battlefield.

Jackalope

“Of course Jackalopes are real. They got ‘em as trophies in every hunting lodge.”

– Tajy Gainfrddle AKA Tajy the Gullible.

***

The Jackalope appears either as a jackrabbit with pronghorns or as a hare with deer horns. These are mysterious and magical creatures, sought after as trophies by ambitious hunters. Wiser folk know that the goodwill of a Jackalope is far more valuable than a pelt and some horns.

Creeping Gaze

“What’s looking at you?” – Myai

“A looking thing.” – Gorlis

“Well, look at it!” – Gorlis

A Creeping Gaze is an eye about the size of a large apple with 6 long spindly legs attached to it. It is a fragile critter, but it is also highly intelligent. All of these creatures have been blessed with powers of divination, the effect of which most people seem to find rather disconcerting.

Their limited means of communication makes it difficult for others to appreciate their powers of insight. Still, any spell caster powerful enough to resolve this problem is likely to find a Creeping Gaze useful to have around. They make wonderful familiars.
